Program Description:
Discover the Netherlands: Water, Wheels and Windmill

Program Overview:

Explore beautiful windmills, blooming tulip fields and 17th century water canals in the Netherlands this spring. In this 9-day program, students will have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the Dutch culture.  After arriving in Amsterdam, we will travel by train to Leeuwarden, the largest city in Friesland.  We will spend three nights in the largest city of the northwest province studying agriculture and food with Dutch students at Van Hall Larenstein University, while also taking in the rich history of the 13th century city.  The final three nights of the study abroad program will be in Amsterdam where students can explore museums, such as the Ann Frank Museum or Van Gogh Museum or explore monuments and other historical points of interest.  On our last day, we will travel by train to the historic village of Zaanse Schans, where we will learn the process of Dutch wooden shoe making and tour historic windmills. 
 
Netherlands Windmill

Location:

During the 9-day program, students will travel to Leeuwarden and Amsterdam.


Academics:

FDSC 389  Three credits for the course is earned after students complete the following requirements:
  1. Participating in the 2-hour weekly lecture preceding the abroad portion of the program.
  2. Submitting a travel journal, detailing experience and relevance to area of study at the end of the study abroad program.
  3. Participating in thoughtful discussions during the study abroad experience.
  4. Complete required readings and assignments.

Netherlands Food

Housing & Meals:

Hotel accommodations are included in the program fee.  Some breakfasts are provided as well as two  group dinners.  Students purchase the remainder of the meals.


Travel Arrangements:

Airfare is arranged and included in the program fee.  Train transfers to and from hotels and airports, as well as in-country air transportation is included in the program fee.


Additional Information:

Entries to most museums and other sites are included.
