Wisconsin Resident Education Abroad Grant
Wisconsin Resident Education abroad grants are available to support UWRF students who will be participating in UW-River Falls education abroad programs. These grants are meant to defray the cost of an education abroad program but, since the grant depends upon the Wisconsin state budget and appropriate fund allocation, should not be the deciding factor in whether or not a student is able to pursue an international education experience. Grants will be made in the $1,000 (semester-length program) or $500 (short-term program) range, depending on the availability of funds and the number of applicants. The final dollar amount awarded will be determined by the reviewing committee based on the total cost of the program and the student's financial need. These grant monies are provided by the State of Wisconsin and allocated through the University of Wisconsin System. Please note, only Wisconsin resident undergraduate students participating in UWRF credit-bearing programs
(fees paid to UWRF) are eligible to receive this grant.
- Student must be a resident of Wisconsin
- Student must participate in a credit-bearing UW-River Falls education abroad program (no third-party programs or other US university programs)
- Student must be a bachelor's degree-seeking student from UW-River Falls
- Student must not be on academic probation/suspension
- Awards will generally be granted one time per student, but exceptions may be made
- Student must demonstrate financial need
Of the semester-length program grants awarded, preference will be given to those applicants who participate in a UWRF-sponsored international exchange program (Shih Hsin, Shih Chien, Dongguk, Hessen, CONAHEC, etc.), though all students participating in a UWRF semester-length program are encouraged to apply
Once recipients are selected by the Office of International Education (OIE) staff, OIE contacts the Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office must include the award in the student's financial aid package. Grants cannot be disbursed to the student account until the sixth day of the semester for which he/she is studying abroad. If there is no outstanding balance on the student account, the Accounts Receivable Office will issue a refund to the student. If the student has an outstanding balance, the award reduces the balance on the account. Students who have complete applications submitted by the deadline will receive written notification of the decision.
While abroad and/or upon return from their education abroad experience, awardees are encouraged work with the Office of International Education to complete at least one activity/project designed to promote education abroad on the UW-River Falls campus (options include volunteering at the annual education abroad fairs, producing an approved informational classroom presentation, posting a blog about their education abroad experience, creating a YouTube video featuring their education abroad program, participating in an alumni panel for education abroad orientation, submitting photos to the OIE for use in promotional materials and/or online, writing a promotional article about their experience for the Student Voice
The University of Wisconsin-River Falls offers scholarships for both incoming freshmen and continuing students. Scholarships offered have a variety of requirements; for more information about specific scholarships please visit the Financial Aid Office's website
