Program Description:
Taiwan Biomedical Education Abroad

Program Overview:

Tentative Dates: 20 Dec. 2017 - 19 Jan. 2018

This is a science-based research/study/ecotourism education abroad J Term program to Taiwan with a theme of searching for potential heart failure drugs from Chinese medicine and marine species. The unique features of this program include:
  1. the connection between Dr. Huang at UWRF and the researchers at universities and research institutions in Taiwan
  2. the easy and low cost experimental model for heart failure drug discovery that Dr. Huang established with zebrafish embryos
  3. the rich and unique sources of Chinese herbs and marine species that Taiwan country offers
Therefore, this study abroad program provides undergraduate students with opportunities to study not only foreign cultures and language of Taiwan but also advanced biomedical research utilizing the unique sources from Taiwan. It also has the potential to build international research collaboration.

Program objectives
  • To offer international experience and enhance the awareness of cultural diversity in biology students at UWRF.
  • To offer biomed research opportunity to UWRF biology students in an international setting.
  • To learn the basic knowledge and lab techniques of Chinese medicine and marine natural products that are unique in Taiwan
  • To provide study opportunity to students who are interested in drug discovery and pharmacological research, esp. with natural products.
  • To extend Dr. Huang's research into Chinese herbs and marine products.
  • To pave the road for future international exchange programs in biological science
  • To develop international research collaboration with labs in Taiwan
